Century-old malpractice specialist bridging provider and med-spa entity coverage

Our verdict

A century-old malpractice specialist with the best quoting experience in the category and rare ability to bridge individual provider and med-spa entity coverage — pricing remains quote-based, and the heaviest entity risks may still want a brokered program.

About

CM&F Group has underwritten healthcare liability since 1919, when it was founded in lower Manhattan; in 1947 it built the nation's first liability program for nurses with the American Nurses Association, and since 2021 it has been a division of Specialty Program Group (HUB International). It is an agency/program provider — it designs and distributes coverage placed with carriers it says are rated A++ (Superior) by AM Best — rather than a risk-bearing carrier itself.

For med spas, CM&F's distinctive angle is bridging the two halves of aesthetic liability: individual professional liability for cosmetic nurses, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, estheticians and physicians performing Botox, fillers, laser and peel work, and entity-level coverage for the med spa business, with supervising physician/medical director coverage, general liability, HIPAA defense and cyber options layered on. Policies are portable — coverage follows the provider anywhere they practise, including telehealth. It is an official insurance partner of AmSpa. Quotes are online and near-instant, though actual pricing is not published.

Ideal customer

Cosmetic nurses, injectors, NPs, PAs and physicians who want their own portable malpractice policy — and med-spa owners who want entity, medical-director and provider coverage aligned under one long-established specialist.

Our CM&F Group review

Why CM&F Group

Insurance is a trust product, and CM&F Group has more accumulated trust than almost anyone in this category: founded in 1919 in lower Manhattan, it built the nation's first nurses' liability program with the American Nurses Association in 1947, and it has been underwriting allied-health malpractice ever since. Since 2021 it has operated as a division of Specialty Program Group under HUB International. To be precise about structure: CM&F is an agency and program provider, not a risk-bearing carrier — it designs and distributes coverage placed with underwriters it reports as rated A++ (Superior) by AM Best, the highest rating the agency assigns.

What stands out

CM&F's real distinction in the med-spa market is that it credibly covers both halves of aesthetic liability. Most owners eventually learn that the spa's entity policy and each injector's personal malpractice policy are different animals, often bought from different vendors that don't talk to each other. CM&F writes individual professional liability for cosmetic RNs, NPs, PAs, estheticians and physicians doing Botox, filler, laser and peel work — with limits to $1M per claim / $6M aggregate — and med-spa entity coverage, plus supervising physician coverage for oversight states, general liability, HIPAA defense and cyber options. Aligning all of it under one specialist removes the coverage-gap finger-pointing that plagues claims.

The provider policies are genuinely portable: coverage follows the clinician 24/7, anywhere they practise, including telehealth — valuable for injectors who work across multiple spas or run side clinics. And the buying experience is the best we've seen among the dedicated med-spa insurance specialists: online quotes in as little as five minutes with immediate digital proof of coverage, versus the multi-day application cycles typical of brokered programs. An AmSpa partnership rounds out the med-spa credentials.

Watch-outs

Pricing still isn't published. Quoting is fast, but you won't find a rate card, and the advertised savings of "up to 50% versus other top providers" is a company claim we treat as marketing. CM&F's centre of gravity is provider-first allied-health coverage; a large multi-site med-spa group with property, products and unusual add-on needs (private-label lines, abuse/molestation cover) may still find a brokered program like PPIB's assembles a wider package. And while the firm's longevity speaks for itself, there are no verifiable third-party aggregate ratings of the agency to benchmark day-to-day service.

Who it's for

Individual injectors, cosmetic nurses, NPs and PAs should have CM&F on any shortlist — the portable, fast-to-bind provider policy is close to the category default for good reason. For med-spa owners, it's an excellent fit when the priority is aligning entity, medical-director and provider coverage with a single, century-old specialist, especially at solo-to-small-group scale. Alongside PPIB, it's one of our two category leaders — with the smoother buying experience of the pair.
